Back Pain Causes & Treatment

Improperly treated accident injuries, sport injuries, and even poor posture can lead a herniated or bulging disc, which can cause back pain. Your spinal cord is encased in a series of protective joints known as vertebrae, with flexible, shock-absorbing discs between them. When one or more of these discs is no longer in correct alignment, you will experience pain.

Some of the most common reasons behind mid, upper and lower back pain include:

  • Subluxations – a bone that is out of place putting pressure on a nerve that causes problems
  •  Herniated Disc ("Slipped Disc" or "Ruptured Disc")
    •  Bulging Disc
    •  Sciatica
    •  Sports Injuries
    •  Degenerative Disc Disease
    •  Whiplash/Car Accident Injury
    •  Pinched Nerve
    •  Spinal Stenosis
    •  Spondylolisthesis

Our Approach

Medication is commonly used to manage back pain; however, drugs work by reducing the brain’s ability to sense pain signals. Consequently, as soon as the medication wears off, the pain will return. Chiropractic care is different. Spinal adjustments correct the underlying mechanical misalignment that is causing your pain, reducing nerve compression for long-term pain relief.

In addition to hands-on chiropractic adjustments, we may offer various other techniques such as hot or cold therapy, NMR neuromuscular re-education, physiotherapy modalities, corrective exercises and non-surgical spinal decompression.

How Spinal Decompression Works To Alleviate Back Pain

Spinal decompression involves stretching of the spine. This, in turn, takes pressure off the spinal disks, which, in turn, relieves pressure from the nerve. Spinal Decompression can create a negative pressure within the disc causing a "vacuum effect," literally sucking the bulging or herniated discs back within the spinal column and away from nerve tissue to relieve your symptoms, like back pain or numbness and tingling.

What To Expect

We use advanced diagnostic exams to precisely identify the underlying spinal misalignment that is triggering your back pain. Once this location has been identified, we work closely with you to create a custom treatment plan that best addresses your pain.

We will also work with you to help reduce the causes for back pain through lifestyle changes. Improved posture and ergonomic adjustments can reduce lumbar spine compression and lower your risk for back pain. For example, if you sleep on your side, placing a pillow between your legs will better support your spine by reducing tension in your lower back. When you are at work, be sure the height of your chair is correctly adjusted and that your computer screen is positioned at eye level so you are not straining your shoulders or leaning your head forward. We may also teach you corrective exercises to better support spinal health. While all these changes may seem minor, they can add up to a big quality of life improvement!
